A woman allegedly delivered a mermaid-like (Maame Water) baby at the Suntreso Government Hospital in Kumasi on Friday, unconfirmed reports indicate.

The sight of the baby that was without genitals reportedly sent shivers down the spines of medical doctors and nurses on duty at the time, gathered. The clear deformities on the child did not scare the doctors and the nurses alone, as the mother of the kid too was said to be looking a bit petrified.

According to reports, the courageous nurses and doctors at the medical facility, however, assisted the mother to deliver safely.

The child, though said to be healthy at birth, had several defects, among them being having only one leg. Most of the hospital staff reportedly took to their heels upon setting their eyes on what looked like a baby mermaid.

Attempts by this paper to get official report about the authenticity or otherwise of the incident from the hospital authorities proved futile.

When visited the health facility around 4:30 pm on Friday, the Suntreso Government Hospital looked unusually quiet.

Most of the staff were said to have gone home, leaving a few – mostly nurses – on duty.

The hospital staff spoke to flatly refused to speak for fear of being victimised by management.

But the demeanour and actions of the nurses suggested that they had spotted something unusual that day.

The nurses in particular looked calm as they stood in groups discussing something which could be serious and scary.

Some of the nurses this paper approached with the mermaid-like baby issue reacted, 'Please, we don't want trouble, leave us alone.
