In the wake of the affirmative action debate that seems to have divided members of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo has been challenged by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West, not to shy away from the promise he made to women three years ago.
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful disclosed on UTV's "Adekye Nsroma" that in 2012, the NPP, led by their flag bearer Nana Akufo-Addo, gave an assurance to all Ghanaian women that if he is elected as president, he would encourage them to participate in governance.
Aside from this, she also revealed that Nana Addo also promised to save them the hassle of going through parliamentary primaries to up their numbers in his government.
“Before the general elections in 2012, WiLDA- Ghana, FIDA- Ghana, Gender Sector and the Hunger Project invited all presidential candidates and asked them what they would do to empower women if they are given the opportunity to lead this country”.
“I (Ursula) was the person who stood in and read a statement on behalf of the NPP. In that statement the NPP vowed that it would save women in the party the hassle of going through primaries during elections”, she said.
As a result of the promise, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful claims WiLDA wrote a letter to her flagbearer to remind him of the promise he made to women.
The Ablekuma West MP believes the time is up for Nana Akufo Addo to fight for women as he promised some years back.
