MAR 4, 2015 LISTEN

The Standard Chartered Trophy-Road to Anfield five a-side football tournament delivered huge networking opportunities and great excitement among corporate clients, customers, staff and media partners of the Bank last Saturday at the Lizzy Sports Complex.

Thirty-two teams, including those from the media and corporate clients, customers and staff of Standard Chartered, competed for glory and an opportunity to represent Ghana at the West Africa Regional Finals to be held on Saturday 14 March 2015. On the sidelines and off the playing field the tournament provided a huge platform for networking and engagement among the Bank's stakeholders.

After a fun-filled ceremonial match between senior management and key stakeholders of the Bank, the tournament got underway with the participating teams competing fiercely through the group stages. The top two teams from each group progressed to the 16-team knock-out stage with two teams, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and Oman FM, eventually making it to the final. After a very cagey game which looked like it was heading for a penalty shoot-out, Oman FC scored a late goal to claim the final trophy.

Oman FM has therefore won the right to proceed to the next stage and compete against the winners from The Gambia and Nigeria for the one slot to represent West Africa at the final tournament at Anfield, home of Liverpool FC. A total of ten teams from across Standard Chartered's global footprint will compete for the ultimate trophy at Anfield.

Speaking during the tournament on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered's Head of Transaction Banking, West Africa, Victor Asante said;

“Being a brand which is passionate about what resonates with its customers and clients, Standard Chartered has leveraged on its sponsorship with Liverpool to make the dreams of many Ghanaian football fans come true.

This tournament is a great opportunity for us in Ghana to send a team to Anfield to play in the finals and experience what it is like playing at the awe-inspiring home ground of Liverpool FC and win honours for our country.  For us at Standard Chartered it is another opportunity to deliver on our Brand Promise of being Here for good.”

The 'Standard Chartered Trophy - Road to Anfield 2015' is an international 5-a-side football tournament that provides local markets with a platform from which to actively engage football fans and also help them donate to charity in order to develop football. It is hinged on the Bank's Liverpool FC sponsorship and is an opportunity for Standard Chartered to reinforce its partnership with Liverpool FC and generate direct benefits to the businesses and its stakeholders.

Standard Chartered has been the main sponsors of Liverpool FC in the English Premier League since 2010.
