Farmer convicted for possessing fire arms without authority

Tarkwa, Feb. 28, GNA - A 30 year-old farmer, Wome John, was on Friday sentenced to 18 months imprisonment in hard labour for possessing of fire arms and ammunitions without authority.

He pleaded not guilty.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah told the court, presided by Mr Justice Obeng Asante that the complainants are Police Officers at the Tarkwa Divisional Police Headquarters.

He said on October 21, last year, the Police officers were detailed for duty at Timtimhwe police barrier on the Tarkwa-Bogoso road.

He said at about 1720 hours, a Sprinter Benz bus with registration number AS 3954-12 travelling from Tarkwa to Kumasi was stopped and a search was conducted on the bus.

Chief Inspector Amponsah said during the search, a locally manufactured pistol with four AAA life cartridges without valid documents were found on the accused.

He said the accused was arrested and handed over to the divisional Criminal Investigation Department at Tarkwa for investigation.

The Prosecutor said when the accused was interrogated, he admitted being the owner of the locally manufactured pistol and the four life AAA cartridges, claiming he used the pistol to protect himself and after investigation, he was charged with the offence.
