Hanoi, Feb. 23, (dpa/GNA) - Fights breaking out over the Lunar New Year holiday in Vietnam resulted in more than 5,000 people being sent to hospital, news reports said Monday.

On the peak day, 11 people died as a result of fights and 900 people were hospitalised during Tet, the nine-day holiday accompanied by widespread alcohol consumption that ends Monday, newspaper Thanh Nien reported, quoting figures from the Ministry of Health.

The news attracted widespread attention on social media, with many users decrying the figures.

"The high number reflects the fact that culture, morality and discipline in Vietnam has serious problems,"

Facebook commenter Trung Dung Pham said.
Prominent economist Le Dang Doanh called it "very worrying" in a posting on his Facebook page.

"Vietnam must enjoy Tet in another way. It's impossible to enjoy Tet with so many fatalities, traffic jams, and pickpockets." GNA EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE
