Some elders and sub-chiefs related to the Bolgatanga skin were attacked by some unidentified persons on Saturday February 21, 2015 while heading to the Bolga Naba's Palace to attend a meeting.

The machete-wielding attackers who were also armed with crude weapons slashed the elders with their weapons and beat them to a pulp.

The injured traditional elders are currently on admission at the Bolgatanga Regional hospital pending investigations.

The chief of Yibong, who was identified as one of the victims sustained severe cuts on the head with the rest sustaining various degrees of injuries.

One of the victims, John Agolma, said no reason was given for the said attack and that he was spared because one of the attackers identified him as a former Assembly member.

The Upper East Regional Police Command has so far deployed a number of police personnel to provide maximum security for the chiefs and people of the area.

The Public Relations Officer of the regional police command, ASP Thomas Agbenyo told Ultimate FM's Joseph Osei Oppong-Brenya in an interview that the Officers were deployed to the crime scene to stave off reprisal attacks and further violence.

The Regional Security Council has convened an emergency meeting with the Municipal Chief Executive, and other opinion leaders to find an amicable solution to the impasse.

The MCE, Edward Ayagle, has assured residents of the area that the security agencies have the situation under control and urged them to remain calm.

Mr Ayagle said he has prevailed on one of the factions to exercise restraint in order not to disturb the prevailing peace in the area.

All the chiefs that were called for the meeting were dispersed and escorted to safety by Police Officers. The Bolgatanga skin became vacant following the death of Naba Martin Abilba a year ago.
