New Delhi, Feb. 13, (dpa/GNA) - At least 10 passengers died and 17 were injured when a train derailed in India's southern state of Karnataka on Friday, police said.

The engine and eight coaches derailed near the border with Tamil Nadu state, over an hour after the train left state capital Bangalore.

The accident occurred after the train hit a boulder that had fallen on the track, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said in a tweet.

Prabhu said he was leaving for Bangalore to oversee rescue and relief operations.

India's railways carry an estimated 20 million passengers daily and have a poor safety record.
