Guwahati, January 10 (IBNS): A most wanted militant of NDFB(S) was killed in a gun fight with security forces during the intensified operation against the extremist group on Saturday in Assam's Kokrajhar district a day after police had arrested seven NDFB(S) militants, police said.

Security forces gunned down Jeblang alias Jagat Basymutary, platoon commander of NDFB(S) and one of the most wanted militant of Assam Police during an encounter at Thausiguri area in the district.

Assam police IGP of BTAD Dr LR Bisnoi said that, following a tip-off, police and SSB had jointly launched operation against the militants at the remote area and the most wanted militant was killed during gun fight.

Security forces recovered one AK-56 rifle, two grenades, 22 rounds ammunition in possession from the slain militant.

"Jeblang was involved in the recent massacre at Pakhriguri area in Kokrajhar district, " Assam Police IGP(L&O) SN Singh said.

Earlier Assam police had announced Rs 5 lakh cash award for given information of Jeblang.

IGP of BTAD Dr LR Bisnoi said that, the militant was involved in the killing of five hindi speaking people in Kokrajhar district in last year.

Jeblang was also involved in the killing of 16 year old girl in Chiang district in last year.

Police and army had arrested seven hardcore militants belonging to NDFB(S) from Kokrajhar district on Friday.

NDFB(S) militants had killed at least 80 Adivasi innocent people in Sonitpur and Kokrajhar district on December 23, two day before of Christmas.

On other hand, a total of 1,92,960 people had left to their own homes who took shelter in relief camps in Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Chirang and Udalguri district.

A top official of Assam government said that, at present a total of 93,310 inmates are in 58 relief camps in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Udalguri district.

"Out of 93,310 inmates 73,431 inmates in 45 camps in Kokrajhar, 19,237 in 10 camps in Chirang and 642 in 3 camps in Udalguri district, " the official said.
