The Craze To Teach In China: Ghanaian Community Cautions Teachers Migrating
10.01.2015 LISTEN

Ghanaian Community in China has been grappling with influx of so called teachers who are migrating to China. The situation has become so alarming that the community wishes to appeal to the electronic media to have a passionate discussion on this issue.

The Community will not dispel that fact that Ghanaians have achieved a lot through teaching and even as of now there are some who are doing creditably well in China. Our checks from the schools reveal that, the teachers emolument ranges from 800usd to 1,500usd, free accommodation, internet and round trip ticket to Ghana.

Considering the juicy nature of the salary, one will ask why this caution from the Ghanaian Community. The passion within the youth to go abroad keeps on escalating especially with the current economic situation in Ghana. The community will not deter anyone from migrating to China but the intent must be spelt out clearly. China has become the business hub for traders and securing visas is not a hurdle for these so called agents.

These agents lure the youth to believe that migrating to China to teach is lucrative and charge them between 500usd to 1000usd without explaining china immigration laws. The immigration law in china stipulates that, once you enter China, you must register at a local police within 24hours except lodging in a hotel. Failure to do so attract a penalty of 2000rmb (330usd) and in other instances your visa shall be reduced to 10days to leave the shores of CHINA.

Secondly, those who intend to stay for longer period but their visas permit 30days stay should submit their passports to the immigration with the necessary documents for extension. Upon submission, the applicant shall be given 15 to 30days after which he/she must return to Ghana.

The prospective teachers who intend to teach in China need to come with working visas or substantial amount of money to contract agents for 6months to 1year visa. Without a valid visa and you manage to find a school, your stay becomes illegal and you become liable to a fine of 10,000rmb (1,600usd) or 10 to 30days in prison.

Currently, China Police is cracking down illegal immigrants and Ghanaian Community implores every Ghanaian who intends to sojourn in China seek advice from the Community or Ghana Embassy. The Community or the Embassy does not have any ''monetary intervention'' for a Ghanaian who becomes stranded or arrested in China but can only facilitate the repatriation process by way of pleading.

It is sad to note that, Ghana comes second to Nigeria with regards to criminal records in China and the offences are related to visa issues and drugs.

Ghanaian Community can only sensitize the public to take the necessary precautions anytime traveling to China and warn the agents who create the impression to their gullible clients that China is a fertile ground to amass wealth easily. We shall be grateful if the electronic media could highlight this issue in one of their daily deliberations.

AFEHYIA to His Excellency Mr. Anani Demuyakor, the ambassador ,the entire of staff of Ghana Embassy( Beijing) , Businessmen in Guangzhou, teachers and students across China.
