The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development is distributing about 10,000 litter bins in the Ashanti Region, to facilitate the next sanitation exercise which will be observed in the region.

The ensuing edition of the National Sanitation Day exercise comes off next Saturday, January 3, 2015 but the Ministry in a new strategy, is shifting focus from holding it simultaneously across the country, to doing so on regional basis.

This is to provide an opportunity for the Ministry to have at first hand, the peculiar environmental challenges in the regions and strategise to dealing with them.

The Ashanti Region, thus, becomes the first to host the exercise which will also be held across the region's districts. It is also to honour Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his interest and the enthusiasm he has shown in previous National Sanitation Day exercises.

Speaking to Myjoyonline.com sector Minister, Julius Debrah explained that each of the 30 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) will be given 200 bins to facilitate in ensuring that waste materials are not left on the streets uncollected after the exercise.

According to Mr. Debrah, 500 bins and other equipment would be made available to the Regional Police Command to be distributed among officers participating in the exercise. The rest will be handed to Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) supply to other communities.

Apart from the bins, the Ministry is also making available equipment needed for the exercise.

The Minister, his two deputies- Nii Lantey Vanderpuje and Emmanuel Agyekum- and the Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong have been operating from the Ashanti Region for the past couple of weeks to court support for the upcoming exercise.

Several organisations in the region including SIC Life, Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Obibini Blackman, have also donated quantities of bins, brooms and other equipment towards the exercise.

Next Region to host the NSD on February 7, 2015, is the Northern Region.
