African Mayor Awards to Launch in Angola.

United Cities and Local Governments-Africa (UCLG–A) launches first ever "African Mayor Awards” in Luanda, Angola.

LONDON/LUANDA, 19 December 2014: To celebrate the achievements and excellence in the development of African cities, the inaugural 2015 "José Eduardo dos Santos African Mayor Awards”, created by the UCLG-A, has been launched. The awards ceremony will take place on 6 March 2015 in Luanda, Angola.

The African Mayor Awards will acknowledge the leadership and contribution of Mayors of large, medium and small cities across Africa during a formal ceremony and a gala dinner chaired by President José Eduardo dos Santos in Luanda. The event will be attended by over 450 guests who will comprise of government officials, city leaders, African mayors, investors and business leaders. The Awards will take place in conjunction with the 2nd Africa Urban Infrastructure Investment Forum on 5-6 March 2015 in Luanda, Angola.

The African Mayor Awards programme recognises, celebrates and rewards City leaders or Governors who display exemplary qualities such as good leadership, innovative thinking, excellent management capabilities and social awareness to foster economic growth and development. They have strong vision and integrity, are able to offer security to city people, encourage good relations between communities and protect the environment.

The Awards aim to raise the profile of Africa's Mayors by honouring those who have made an outstanding contribution to their communities and developed a vision for urban living, working and visiting across Africa. It is being supported by the Government of Angola, the UN-Habitat, the UCLG-A and the IC Publications Group. Each year, outstanding African Mayors and municipal professionals from large metropolis (1,000,000 residents or more), intermediate (less than a 1,000,000 and more than 200,000 residents) and small cities (up to 200,000 residents) will have the opportunity to win the prestigious "José Eduardo dos Santos” African Mayor Award.

Registration for the awards will be open soon and entries must be submitted online: www.africanmayorawards.com. Visionaries and forward-thinking city leaders, governors and mayors are invited to participate by highlighting their main achievements and vision for developing sustainable urban cities in Africa. City and regional boards, private and public sector companies and institutions have been invited to send in their entries for their City Mayors and Governors provided they fully comply with the eligibility criteria.

For the inaugural year the organisers will commission a renewed Angolan artist to design a trophy that will be unique, inspirational and capture the past, present and future of African cities. The piece should represent courage and conviction as well as the urban challenges African Mayors face ahead. The award will include the trophy, a certificate and a cash prize, to be given to a specific project of the City of the Awarded Mayor or Governor.
