The Ashanti Regional Police Command has successfully retrieved 11 stolen cars.

Nine people who are believed to have a hand in the stealing of the cars are currently in the grip of police assisting in investigations.

DCOP Kofi Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, described the retrieval of the cars as a major breakthrough for the police in the fight against car theft in the region.

Addressing a press conference, the police capo said there were incidents of car snatching on the Atimatim/Masse road recently.

He said upon intelligence report the police apprehended one Bismarck Opoku who was on police wanted list for his involvement in a robbery case.

Upon his arrest, Opoku led the Mamponteng District Police to Saekwa in the Brong Ahafo Region to arrest other suspected criminals.

In all, the police managed to arrest nine suspected criminals including Opoku and retrieved 11 stolen cars from them.

Among those arrested was one Karikari Isaac who was driving a Kia Rio with registration number AW 9390-12 at Wenchi. He claimed he bought the car from one Robert at GH¢6,000 eight months ago.

Lawrence Bekoe, 25, another suspect, was arrested with a Nissan Almera car with registration number AS 714-14, which he said he bought from one Alhaji at GH¢6,500.

At the time of his arrest, Fuseini Sulemana, 22, was driving a Toyota Echo registered as GW 4567-12, which he said he bought at GH¢6,500.

Takyi Isaac, 18 years old, was also picked up driving a Toyota Echo with registration number GT 5768-13, which he claimed belonged to one Staka Haruna of Techiman.

Karikari Kwaku, 30, was arrested whilst driving a private car with registration number AS 9229-12 which he said he bought from one 'Our Lady' at GH¢6,000. He added that he later sold it to suspect Frank Twum at GH¢5,000.

Siaka Haruna was arrested with a Toyota Echo with registration number GT 6568-13 at Broham and he claimed the car belonged to his brother Zakaria.

Felix Dassaa was also arrested driving a Toyota Corolla, registered AS 4992-12, which he claimed he bought from suspect Kwaku Karikari at GH¢6,000, adding that he had made a part payment of GH¢5,000.

Also picked up together with the suspects was Osman Daud, 33, who claimed to be a brother of Fuseini, one of the suspects linked to the car thefts.

DCOP Kofi Boakye assured that the police was doing everything possible to arrest other people who were believed to have a hand in the car snatching cases.
