A 30-YEAR-OLD suspected armed robber is in the firm grip of the Prampram District police for allegedly inflicting machete wounds on a taxi driver after purportedly robbing him.
The culprit, Kwame Amedomeh alias Dan Arhin, a resident of Asutsuare Junction in the Eastern Region, was reported to have drawn a machete and inflicted wounds on the cabbie.
He was said to have hired the services of the driver to Lakpleku, a village near Tsopoli in the Ningo-Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region and succeeded in robbing him of the vehicle, a mobile telephone and the proceeds for the day and sped off.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Paul Bampo, Prampram District Police Commander, explained to DAILY GUIDE that on November 21, 2014 at about 12pm Kwaku Amoah, taxi driver of a Hyundai Elantra taxi cab with registration number GM 167-14, was asked by the suspect to take him to Lakpleku to meet his brothers who he said were surveying their land.
The journey, according to the police officer, started at the Tema motorway roundabout and on reaching a section of the Tema-Aflao highway, the passenger pulled a machete which was hidden in his dress at the driver and ordered him to alight and surrender all his properties, including monies and the ignition key of the car to him (suspect).
After collecting the items, Kwame Amedomeh, DSP Bampo disclosed, further ordered the driver to undress, saying that he was sent by his master to kill him (cabbie).
The driver sensing danger, took to his heels but the suspect chased him with the weapon and slashed his head and cheek, creating deep cuts on the said parts of his body.
Out of fear, Amoah ran further towards some people he saw in a farm nearby. Amedomeh, on seeing them, returned to where the taxi was parked.
He went to move the taxi at top speed towards the main Tema-Aflao dual carriageway in an attempt to escape with it but ran into a tree near the road and abandoned the mangled vehicle.
An eyewitness said he assisted the victim to report the matter to the Tsopoli police with the physical features of the suspect in mind.
On the same day, the eyewitness claimed he spotted the suspect in an Ashaiman-bound commercial vehicle they had boarded together and alerted the police at the Ashaiman Roundabout who immediately arrested Amedomeh and handed him over to the Prampram police.
The victim, who was then with the Prampram police, came to the Ashaiman Police Station and identified the suspect.
According to DSP Bampo, the suspect would soon be hauled to court for prosecution.
