ECG Saga: About 3,000 Workers Nationwide To Be Sacked Next Year
24.11.2014 LISTEN

Apart from the hundreds of workers in the Ashanti East district of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) losing their jobs soon to the newly introduced smart prepaid metres, the Maintenance Officer of ECG in the Central Region, Mr. Brekorang has disclosed that the dismissal will be nationwide.

According to him, about 3,000 workers of ECG nationwide will be affected due to the sale of part of the distribution services to a private investor, adding up to the unemployment situation in the country.

Speaking on  Okay FM's Ade Akye Abia  Morning Show, Mr. Brekorang feared that Ghanaians will suffer if a private company takes over the distribution service as the price of the credit for the meters will be higher than the price of fuel.

'What is so sad is that next year about 3,000 workers of ECG are going home and they are going to add up to the unemployment situation in the country. The consequence of this is that as they want to sell the ECG, Ghanaians will suffer the more when they buy credit from ECG; the situation of the credit will be more than fuel increment,' he alleged.

He insisted that the problem in the energy sector is not with ECG but within the Volta River Authority (VRA) and Ghana Grid Company Ltd (GRIDCo) as ECG only distributes what these two companies generate.

He however disclosed that ECG has improved a lot after the former boss, Rev. Ing. William Hutton-Mensah had invested in the human resource department, as personnel from South Africa came to train their Ghanaian counterparts in their service delivery.
