The Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), yesterday held a roundtable discussion with senior security operatives to boost security in the country.

The event, which took place at the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Accra was held under the theme, 'The changing face of security, Our Preparedness.'

The Minister State in charge of Public Private Partnership (PPP), Rashid Pelpuo, who represented the Vice President at the event, said considering the security threats facing the country today, it is prudent to hold such meetings regularly.

The Minister stated that no nation, tribe or society can develop without peace and security.

He added that the event provided a platform for the examination of ideas to monitor the strategies and activities of criminals.

The Minister said as a result of the importance that is placed on security issues, successive governments have tried to enhance the operations of the country's security agencies through the provision of various working tools and equipment.

Dr. Rashid Pelpuo added that real or perceived threats always test the strength and resilience of relevant institutions of state.

He also highlighted the threat posed by the deadly Ebola virus.

Even though Ghana is relatively peaceful, it has over the years experienced its fair share of violent internal conflicts, Mr. Pelpuo indicated.

He said many internal conflicts, which border on chieftaincy and land disputes, inter-ethnic rivalry, among others, have led to the loss of lives and property.

The Deputy Minister of Defence, Alexander Segbafia, stressed the need to bring together all key stakeholders to engage in fruitful talks on the preparedness of nation's security agencies.

The absence of collaboration among various security agencies is in itself a potential threat to our collective security as a nation, criminals know how to collaborate among themselves in carrying their out nefarious activities and it only stands to reason that those in charge of the protection of decent and law-abiding citizens collaborate even more.

The event was chaired by Jane Kwawu, an international consultant.
