8th Pan African Congress Postponed Amidst Ebola Threat
17.10.2014 LISTEN

The Local Organising Committee of the 8th Pan African Congress, at its meeting on 26 September 2014 proposed to the International Preparatory Committee to postpone the Congress originally scheduled for 27-28 October 2014
in Accra, Ghana.

The proposal was made after the Committee considered the health and socio-economic situation in parts of the West African sub-region. The meeting further proposed that a new date of the Congress should be around early March 2015.

The proposal became necessary, principally as a result of the outbreak of the Ebola disease in West and Central Africa and its implications for holding such a major event which is supposed to draw participants from all over the continent and the Diaspora.

In the considered view of the LOC, a postponement would enable the organisers and other stakeholders to fully evaluate the implications of the Ebola outbreak on such a grand event in order to secure an inclusive Pan African Congress.

The LOC has informed the Chairperson and the Secretariat of the Pan African Movement in Kampala, Uganda about the proposal. The LOC has since asked the Government of Ghana to communicate with the African Union Commission about the proposal.

In the meantime, the LOC is continuing with the preparations for the Congress in earnest.
