United Nations (United States) (AFP) - The UN Security Council on Friday called for an end to the violence engulfing the Central African Republic's capital and condemned the killing of a Pakistani peacekeeper near Bangui.

After months of relative calm, Bangui was once again swept up in sectarian fighting that continued for a third straight day on Friday.

In a unanimous statement, the 15-member Council condemned an attack Thursday on convoy of Pakistani and Bangladeshi troops serving in the UN peace mission in CAR that left one peacekeeper dead and eight others injured.

The Council "expressed their concern about the upsurge of violence over the recent days in Bangui and called for an end to such violence."

It was the first peacekeeper death of the mission that deployed last month in the Central African Republic, taking over from African-led troops that were sent after a March 2013 coup plunged the country into bloodshed and chaos.
