Regional Commander Visits Accident Victims

The Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has called on drivers and other motorists to slow down at Zebra crossings and adhere to all road signs.

He made the call when he and some senior police officers visited three children, who were knocked down on a Zebra crossing on the newly-constructed Awoshie-Pokuase Road by a hit-and run driver of an unregistered vehicle at Awoshie Station area at about 5pm on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 in Accra.

One of the victims, identified as Gloria Arhin, a 12-year-old Primary 6 pupil of McCarthy DC School, died on the spot while the two others namely Priscilla Mensah, 12 and Elinam Avorgah, 11, sustained injuries in the process.

Eyewitnesses indicated that Priscilla Arhin and Gloria Arhin were knocked down on Tuesday evening while Elinam Avorgah was also knocked down at the same spot on Wednesday morning by the driver of a commercial vehicle with registration number GW 1202-09.

The driver of the commercial driver, one Stephen Anyan, was heading towards Anyaa Market from Abeka-Lapaz.

He was immediately arrested and handed over to the Anyaa Police.

When the entourage got to the house of the late Gloria Arhin, parents of the deceased told the Regional Commander that the girl was crossing the road to buy books.

They said the driver of the unregistered 4X4 vehicle from the opposite direction knocked the girls down on the Zebra crossing.

According to Joseph Nana Arhin, his daughter died on the spot but Priscilla Mensah was severely injured and was rushed to the Korle-Bu teaching hospital for treatment.

Some good Samaritans, who witnessed the accident, attempted to chase the driver.

According to reports, the hit-and-run driver stopped and pulled a gun on the mob.

The irate residents who were terrified fled from the scene, Mr Arhin stated.

DCOP Yohuno promised to do everything possible to apprehend the said driver.

Parts of the vehicle were retrieved at the scene to help police in their investigations.

He urged residents and mechanics to provide the police with the necessary information that will help trace the driver who committed the heinous act.

The police chief charged the MTTU, led by Chief Superintendent Ofosu Ackaah, National Commander of MTTU, to deploy men on the street for 24 hours to check drivers, who may misbehave on the newly-constructed road.

He also said that drivers who drive on unapproved routes should be arrested.

The Regional Commander urged drivers not to go beyond 50km per hour in the area.
