Galamseyer Operator Hangs

A 32-year-old man, Alex Spando Yiden, allegedly tied his neck with a sponge and hanged himself on a tree in front of his house at Kokoteasua, Obuasi in the Ashanti Region .

Shocked neighbours informed the police after they had seen the body of the galamsey (illegal mining) operator dangling on the mango tree early morning of Friday in the community.

Personnel of the Obuasi Municipal police rushed to the site but discovered that the man was already dead.

DSP Mathew Asante said the police had opened an investigation into the incident.

According to him, Alex allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a piece of sponge moments after daybreak at Kokoteasua.

He confirmed that the residents discovered the body of Spando Yiden dangling on a mango tree.

DSP Asante asserted that the body of the deceased miner had since been deposited at the Obuasi Government Hospital for post-mortem.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that curious residents were taken by surprise and had difficulty coming to terms with what had happened.

Alex returned from the Northern Region a few days ago, having gone there to perform the final funeral rites of his late wife, whom he had five children with.
