TWO PERSONS have been confirmed dead from fresh cholera outbreak in the Asutifi South District of the Brong-Ahafo Region.
This adds to the list of over 7,000 cholera cases recorded and over 55 deaths recorded so far across the country.
DAILY GUIDE had gathered that the deceased, Akwamuhene, 65, and Agyemang, 35, all from the same house at Wromso, a mining community near Hwidiem, died on Sunday.
The Medical Director of the St Elizabeth Hospital at Hwidiem, Dr Tutu Ali, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, said one of the victims died in the house and the other one died later while on admission at the hospital.
According to Dr Tutu Ali, there is another cholera patient from the same community currently on admission at the facility, adding that health officials and the political heads have moved into the community to embark on public education and medications to avert an epidemic.
Dr Tutu Ali explained that upon investigations into the cause of the outbreak, it emerged that most of the residents in the town rely on water from a stream as their main drinking water due to a breakdown of the two of the three boreholes in the town.
He disclosed that samples of the water have been taken to the laboratory to determine whether it is the cause of the outbreak or otherwise.
It is strongly believed that the source of the outbreak is the water from the stream, he added.
DAILY GUIDE'S investigations had also revealed that the said stream has been contaminated by activities of illegal mining popularly called galamsey.
The medical officer debunked reports that four other patients also on admission at the hospital have been attacked by cholera.
He explained to DAILY GUIDE that the patients were rather suffering from diarrhoea, but not cholera as being speculated.
Meanwhile, reports are that inhabitants of the house at Wromso where the two victims died are said to have fled the house, thinking that they may also be struck by cholera.
The Brong-Ahafo Region has already recorded five cases of cholera in Nkoranza South and Kintampo Municipalities involving people residing in Accra who came into the region.
