Associate Director of WACAM, Mrs Hannah Owusu Koranteng, has advised Ghanaians to protect and preserve the environment at all times instead of indulging in activities that can affect both plants, animals and water bodies.

She has however appealed to all to do our best in protecting our natural resources which has been useful to mankind over the years.

Mrs. Owusu Koranteng was speaking at Akyem-Saaman in the Fanteakwa district of the Eastern region at a durbar as part of the Ohum-kan festival on the theme "protecting and preserving the environment for posterity".

In her speech, she mentioned illegal mining, indiscriminate felling of trees as well as poor handling of water bodies as some of activities that adversely affects the environment and urged the public to desist from such acts.

She was worried that illegal mining has destroyed the environment for a long time but blamed the Minerals commission, Environmental Protection Agency and other bodies of failing to enforce mining laws in order to regulate activities of mining companies in the country.

"I think the various government agencies have failed in their duties since the effects of mining are clear for all to see," she emphasised.

On his part, Spokesperson for WACAM Youth Association, Togbenu Sampson, who are the organisers of the event expressed gratitude to WACAM for their continuous support to the association and also used the opportunity to appeal his fellow youth to help in the protecting and preserving of the environment due to its importance to mankind.

He therefore appealed to Non-Governmental Organisations as well as corporate bodies to assist the community with a Vocational Centre which will give skill training to the youth in order to provide them with employment.

The assembly member for the area, Hon. Gyetuo Gyengyenku Boateng, was not happy with the operations of Solar mining company whose activities has been a burden on the community and appealed to the minerals commission to monitor their operations well.

He, however, warned that the community will deal with any company or individuals whose operations affects the only river in the area.
