Some flooded areas in Accra
Persistent torrential rains yesterday wreaked havoc on most parts of the national capital, Accra, rendering many people homeless and bringing business activities to a standstill as running water took over homes and streets throughout the metropolis.

Large portions of the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Kaneshie First Light and the Central Business District of Accra, were completely submerged, with some residents who were trapped in the flood shouting for help.

Some of the affected roads were the roads in the North Industrial Area, Dadeban Road and Mallam Kokoroko.

Motorists plying the Race Course and Abeka Lapaz road had their worst nightmare as the only route linking the two areas was totally flooded.

Other motorists from Sowutuom to Lapaz, unaware of the development at the Race Course, had to find their way back as the road was impassable.

Many pedestrians in the same area were severely beaten by the rains as they could not make their way through to their various destinations due to the severity of the rain.

Even though there were pickups passing through the Sowutuom flood to ferry stranded residents and passengers cross the waters, most of them feared risking their lives by getting on board such pickups.

What even worsened the situation for most of them was the fact that they had no umbrellas to shelter them to their respective locations.

Other areas like Nungua, Teshie, Mallam, and Kasoa (in the Central Region), among others, experienced the same problem.

A visit to some of those areas, particularly Circle and other media reports about the situation from other parts of the city, described how many other pedestrians and motorists had to struggle to make their way through the running waters to their destinations.
