Goldfields school complex marks 40th anniversary

Mr Alfred Baku Tarkwa, April 15, GNA - Goldfields school complex has celebrated its 40th anniversary in Tarkwa with a call on old students to assist in raising the quality of infrastructure of their alma mater.

Making the call In a speech read for him, Mr. Alfred Baku, Executive Vice President of Goldfields, said though the school has produced men and women of integrity, it is lagging behind in terms of development.

He said management is determined to ensure that the school develops, but will need the expertise of old students to help their alma mater to progress speedily.

Mr. Baku, who is also the head of West Africa, Goldfields, explained that from 2002 to December 2013, the Tarkwa and Damang operations have spent about 30 percent of their total investments on education in the communities, with more than 900 scholarships and bursaries awards to needy but brilliant students.

He said while the teachers are motivated to put in their efforts at work, managers of the Goldfields Foundation have instituted a monitoring team over the staff to ensure efficiency.

Touching on the theme Forty Years of Academic Excellence, Its Impact on the Nation, the Municipal Director of Education, Mrs. Veronica Ama Jackson, congratulated the staff for their sacrifices and dedication, in moulding the students for the benefit of society.

She thanked the management of Goldfields in supporting the municipal education office to provide quality education.

The headmistress of the school, Mrs. Agnes Aziliko said the school had gone through transformations since its establishment in 1973, with an initial student population of 190, which now stands at 1,482 students with 56 staff members.

She emphasized that despite all the successes achieved by the school, inadequate infrastructure had been a source of worry to the authorities of the school.

She said the school needs staff accommodation, Information Communication

Technology Laboratory, Home Economics Block, modern Library, as well as expansion of the Nursery Department.

The occasion was used to honour long-serving teachers, while students who excelled were presented with awards.
