Health Care Service In Ghanaian Public Hospitals: What The Public Must Note!!
02.02.2014 LISTEN

This is an eye witness and more especially personal, but I deem it so important to share it with Ghanaians all over the world. It is not to ridicule medical practitioners in Ghana, especially those in public hospitals, but to expose the loop holes and rather damaging nature in which some of the unpardonable errors they constantly commit is leading to rampant death of Ghanaians who visit health care service in Ghana. I have decided to withhold the names of particular public hospital and names of doctors for reasons of practice reputation. My readers are must however not regard this as a tale, but a true eye witness story, which can be proven.

My story began when my 6-month old pregnant wife had a fall while descending a small hill close to our household. As a teacher and “Senior Expert in Science Education”, I took my sweet heart to a hospital. When we reached, the necessary assistance was offered. After two days of admission, my wife was taken for scan to see how the foetus might feel, then came the “unpardonable error from the scanned results concerning the foetus”. My wife called me and said the results read that foetus is off and that they must carry out D&C operations(abortion).

Because of my reading and research, I immediately questioned their findings for reasons like:

1. My wife was not bleeding.
2. The extent of the fall as I saw was not too extreme.

3. My wife does not show such symptoms like excessive pains.

When I got there, I immediately told the midwife who sought to explain what is happening to me. Then came my questions, I told the midwife that why is she rushing to give interpretation?. She said it is her job. I said my research findings on the internet prove otherwise! She said I don't understand what I read because am a lay man. I told her I read BSc AGRIC at University of Cape Coast, so I have some basic health knowledge. In fact, the battle over who is right ensued between us for over 30 minutes. I walked out of the ward so furious and my thought was “ you people don't have any exra-o knowledge” based on her argument. At 8:00am, when the Doctor came, I met the Doctor and told him my rejection of their erroneous findings! Well, the Doctor said he will monitor my wife for two days! After three days, I told the doctor I want the scan to be carried out at another place.

When we took the pelvic scan at another place, truly, I was vindicated! I was right as the result showed the fall had no impact on the foetus as I was made aware earlier. The new facility sort got surprise about how on earth will a hospital commit such unpardonable “demolition” findings.

When I came, what I told the nurses and the midwife that “ the work are doing here is abysmal and that is why so many patients are dying here!”. With my basic health knowledge, I have saved my family and I entreat all Ghanains to make sure that whatever it is that you are feeling, search for solutions on the internet before you visit a Ghanaian hospital, otherwise, they will worsen your slight ailment into irreparable calamity.
