Ghana Institute of Journalism, the leading journalism training school in the country has established its own radio station - Radio GIJ 97.7MHz. The station is to help students of the institute acquire hands-on skills in the field of journalism.

According to the rector of the school, Mr. David Newton, it has been training journalists for over fifty years and over these years, the school has been making efforts to acquire its own radio station for the purpose of practical training for students.

Speaking to Bra Chef on Radio Univers' mid morning show, Brunch to Lunch, Mr. Newton said “In the seventies and eighties we were sending students on attachment to GBC. You know in the eighties we were offering diploma courses for three years so that they can spend one year on their attachment. So we have been making efforts to get a radio station and here we are”

“We were lucky to have a donation of equipment from Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) as far back as 2004 but unfortunately the equipment were confiscated by the National Communication Authority until recently but the delay actually came as a result of the refusal to give us frequency” he added.

Radio GIJ 97.7MHz is for the sole purpose of training the student journalists “so that they can play back their own production, access, evaluate and improve on their own works”. The newly established radio station is currently on test transmitting and only residents around the school can tune in since it's transmitting on 10 watt transmitter.
