Robotics Inspired Science Education competition on-going - US Embassy

Accra , Sep 30, GNA -The United States Embassy in Accra this week welcomed over 100 Ghanaian school teams and over 1,000 students gathering to compete regionally to showcase their Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills to address real world challenges.

A statement from the Embassy signed by Jeanne Clark, Information Officer, said the competitions coordinated by the Ghana Robotics Academy Foundation in partnership with Google, the US Embassy Ghana, Rancard, Ghacem, and IEEE is taking place in Tamale, Kumasi, Accra and Cape Coast.

This is the third consecutive year that thousands of participants and supporters have gathered on and off-line in Ghana to encourage this innovative and motivational experience under the tutelage of NASA Senior Robotics Engineer Dr. Ashitey Trebi-Ollennu and prominent Ghanaian professors.

The Robotics Inspired Science Education (RISE) programme seeks to transform the learning experience of young Ghanaians by connecting science theory with hands-on learning experience.

The statement said not only do teachers and students strategize; design, build, program and test an autonomous robot to solve defined real world problems, but students are able to develop leadership skills, self-confidence, presentation and communication skills through the experience of Robotics competitions.

The statement expressed the U.S. Embassy's desire to continuing its educational partnerships and seeing the results of these activities in the months and years to come, as students are able to build on their newly-acquired skills.

The schedules of the programme are Monday-Tuesday, September 30- October 1, 2013:  Two-Day Competition at the Opoku Ware Secondary School, Kumasi; 15 high school clubs participating from Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regions

Wednesday-Thursday, Oct. 2- 3, 2013:  Two-Day Competition at the Christ the King Parish Hall in Accra; 17 high school clubs participating from Greater Accra, Volta and Eastern regions.

Friday- Saturday, October 4-5, 2013: Two-day Competition at the Aggrey Memorial SHS for high school clubs participating from the Central and Western regions.

The Northern Region has already had their turn on Friday- Saturday, September 27-28, 2013:  The Two-Day Competition at the Ghana Library Board comprised 13 high school clubs from Ghana's northern regions.
