The Foundation for Youth,Peace and Development(FYPD) welcomes the decision by the Government of Ghana to introduce,in particular, a fund which is intended to support the youth to develop their business ideas into viable ventures. The Foundation is convinced beyond reasonable doubt, that the Ghanaian youth, are among the most endowed groups of young people in Africa and indeed, the whole world in terms of Business ideas.
Unfortunately, lack of funds and direction, have made it virtually impossible for them to translate the ideas into thriving enterprises. This state of affairs, we believe contributes significantly to the problem of youth unemployment in the country.
We therefore believe, that Government's intention to introduce the Youth Jobs and Enterprise Development Fund is in the right direction, and should be encouraged by all Ghanaians who have the interest of the youth at heart.
Indeed, contrary to criticisms against introduction of the fund,we believe more of such programmes including; establishment of Enterprise Development Centres in the Districts, and the inclusion of entrepreneurship in the curricula of our educational institutions, should be introduced as soon as possible, in order to make the youth creators of jobs instead of job seekers.
We are of the view, that critics of such policies should rather be pre-occupied with devising the most effective strategies, that will help them to monitor the programmes and expose shortcomings that are likely to ruin such important initiatives as the Accra based media house, Joy FM, did in case of GYEEDA.
Yes,it is true that Government is responsible for the adoption and implementation of programmes, but the success of programmes does not depend on only Government. The mass media of communication, civil society, minority groups in parliament and religious bodies, among several others, have even greater responsibility of keeping eagle eyes on them with the aim of ensuring, that they effectively serve the purpose for which they were established.
