The National Road Safety commission has organize a stakeholders forum on tyres standardization based on the research conducted by the commission to assess the impact of used Tyres on road safety.

The outcomes of the study were shared with stakeholders and subsequently translated into the Road Traffic Regulation L.1.2180 that came into force in July 2012.

Executive Director of National Road Safety Commission NRSC, ING. May Obiri Yeboah said at the forum in Accra, that Road Safety is everybody's concern, it is a public health issue and has become a developmental issue which must necessarily attract the attention of policy makers at every level of Government and all stakeholders if they happen to achieve the national target of a single digit fatality rate by the year 2015.

She said a cross section of stakeholders including transporters were given the opportunity to make input into the law, this has become necessary to engage stakeholders further on the provisions of this New law to allow for a smooth implementation of the regulations on tyres as provided by Regulation 62 of the Road Traffic Regulation L.I.2180.

May obiri said the purpose of the forum was to allow for an opportunity to understand the law and enforcement options. It is also meant to create platform for policy makers to benefit from the experience as industry people with public safety as the ultimate expectation.

She declares the mandate of the NRSC is to sensitize the public on the relevance of standard tyres to the safety. She admits the focus being on sub standard tyres and not used tyres as suggested earlier by section of the press.

Senior Planning officer of NRSC.Samuel obeng Asiamah in his presentation stated that Good tyres are more important and should be recommended by consumer for safety sake.

He lamented that tyres are meant to support the weight of a car, transmit the vehicle propulsion and breaking, it also acts as a flexible cushion that absorbs shock.

He therefore advise car owner, drivers and transporters to at least check their car every morning or before taken to long journey because of the pressure amounted to it.
