The union executive members and shop stewards of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), under the umbrella of the Maritime and Dockworkers Union of the TUC, has organised a three-day training course for its members in Takoradi.
The course was aimed at sharpening the skills of the executive members and equipping them with the requisite knowledge that would help them to build a healthy, successful and prosperous union for the benefit of the authority.
The unique certificate training programme, which was facilitated by SAVE Foundation International, capacity building and human resource development Organisation, delivered topics such as The Labour Acts of 2003; Building a successful union; understanding how to deal with grievances; Conflicts and resolutions; Effective communication skills; Public speaking skills; positive attitude for higher performance; Mentoring, stress management, among other things.
The secretary of the local union of Takoradi, Mr Frank B.D. Essilfie, charged the executive members and the shop stewards to unite towards the common vision of fulfilling the aspirations of workers for the benefit of mother Ghana.
On his part, the outgoing training manager of Takoradi Port, Mr Maxwell Sarpong, charged the union executive to provide leadership examples for others to emulate adding that; 'As leaders you have a responsibility to inspire your followers to achieve the organisation's goal of productivity, safety work methods, profitability and excellence'.
He further advised that 'you should engage yourself in healthy positive discussions that will propel the company to greater achievements'.
