The World Bank has criticized the board of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) saying, the members lacks the competence to manage the company efficiently.

A report from the World Bank stated that the board members of the ECG lack managerial competence.

This, the World Bank reckons has resulted in the company's mediocre performance and failure to deliver quality service to Ghanaians.

Speaking on the  Citi Breakfast Show, an Energy Specialist at the World Bank, Sanwich Sunil Matrani stated that the board members of ECG must be independent and be able to stand up to government.

'This company, its financial performance has been mediocre…you are all customers of ECG and you know what type of service you get. When you have to deal with ECG, you have a problem, a technical problem, you have a bill problem… do you think you are getting good service? The answer has to be no.'

He pointed out that ECG is not being run properly 'by its board. Why should ECG lose 25 percent of all the energy that it buys from VRA in a mixture of technical and commercial losses?'

Mr. Matrani suggested that the selection of management and board members for the ECG and the Volta River Authority (VRA) ought to be persons 'good management experience…somebody who has the right kind of professional qualifications.'
