A total of 1,400 students of the Achimota Senior High School in Accra, have been supplied with free bibles, to help them develop relationships with God.

The project, which is an initiative of the former first lady, Mrs Ernestina Naadu Mills, is to encourage the reading of the Bible, especially among SHS students.

Under the project, dubbed 'the Ghana First Lady SHS Students Bible Project', an estimated 500,000 SHS students in the country are to receive free copies of the Bible. It is being distributed at a cost of GHc10 million.

Speaking at the ceremony in Accra, Mrs Mills, advised the youth to refrain from immoral acts that had the tendency to hinder their path to success and blessings.

She, particularly, warned the youth against fornication, lies and deceit, describing those acts as 'blessing blockers'.

Mrs Mills said since the future progression and development of every nation depended largely on the youth, it would be suicidal for them to neglect God.

"If you will devote yourself to learn about Jesus Christ and develop a personal relationship with Him, it will be of great profit to you. You will gain wisdom and understanding from the Bible that you cannot get anywhere else, 'she advised.

According to her, encouraging and inspiring people to read the Bible was her greatest passion.

The General Secretary of Scripture Union (SU) of Ghana, Mr Kwame Adu, attributed the low ethical standard among the youth to what he termed as society's neglect of the youth.

'Until society begins to impact wisdom and true Biblical principles to the youth, the future of our country would be at risk,' he said.

Mr Adu was hopeful that the Bible project would contribute to reducing the severe bible illiteracy among SHS students.

He, therefore, called on churches to team up with the educational institutions to tackle challenges confronting the youth.

In her welcome address, the Headmistress of Achimota SHS, Mrs. Beatrice T. Adom, commended Mrs Mills for her desire to help impart wisdom to thousands of SHS students through the word of God.

She described the degree of immorality among the youth was disturbing and called on the churches to intensify their teachings to address the situation.
