Craftsman arraigned for robbery

Accra, May 21, - A craftsman, Antaru Amadu has been arraigned at an Accra circuit court for conspiring to commit robbery and robbery contrary to sections 23 (1) and 149 of the Criminal Offences Act.

Amadu was said to have conspired with one other person now at large to commit robbery at Russia in the Greater Accra Region.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the offence, but was remanded into police custody to reappear on June 3, 2013.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Patrick Morkeh said the complainant was Thomas Akuamah, a trader who lives at Russia in Accra, while the accused person also lives at Russia.

He said on May 10 2013 at about 0320 hours, the complainant went out to look for a taxi to travel, but while waiting for the taxi he was attacked by the accused with a cutlass and a screwdriver to hand over his bag containing an amount of GH¢1,400 and other personal belongings.

DSP Morkeh said the accused person struggled with Amadu for a while but could not get hold of the bag. Then the second accused now at large, who was hiding came out to assist his friend and got hold of the bag.

He said the complainant then raised the alarm and sensing danger the accused persons took to their heels, but the first accused, Antaru Amadu was arrested by neighbours and handed over to the Police.

Amadu denied the offence in his caution statement.
