Salaries of Ghanaian teachers poorest in public sector – GNAT

Teachers' salaries are the worse among all public sectors workers in the country, says the Ashanti Regional Secretary of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).

According to Mr. Charles Kofi Adum-Nti Achamfour, the Ghanaian teacher has been made worse-off after their migration to the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS).

He attributes the situation to poor scaling of their market premium, in the implementation of the new pay policy, as well as the non-payment of negotiated entitlements and allowances.

“I think the evaluation was poorly done and there are various aspects of concern to teachers that were not considered in the evaluation process. Then during the migration, a lot of our members were worse off in terms of errors that happened and many of them are still grappling with such problems”, he told Luv Fm.

Mr. Achamfuor has been addressing the Quadrennial Delegate's Conference for teachers in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality of Ashanti.

He observed the implementation of the SSSS has brought in an increment in the salaries of teachers, but does not reflect the current state of affairs in the market.

The Regional GNAT Secretary said there are critical challenges facing teachers that need to be addressed by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the government.

“Some teachers who were promoted in 2010 had part of the entitlements slashed by months. These are among the issues that keep making the teacher poorer and de-motivated”, he stated.
