A section of the Clergy in Ghana have kicked against the nomination of human rights lawyer, Nana Oye Lithur, as Minister-designate for Gender, Children and Social Protection on the basis that she is a supporter of homosexual rights.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that the group is spear-heading a national campaign among Christian churches to mass up Christians to protest Nana Oye's nomination.

The pastoral group, made up of Christian leaders who have come together to call themselves 'Concerned Clergy Association of Ghana', have also raised red-flags over the appointment of Dr. Raymond Atuguba, as Secretary to the President.

Bishop Prince Benny Wood, spokesperson for the vexed clergy men explained that when Dr. Atuguba was Executive Secretary of the Constitution Review Commission, he did not make draconian recommendations against homosexuality to the President.

Bishop Wood, leader of Benny Wood International Ministry, insists the nomination of Nana Oye should not be made a minister because her open tolerance for homosexual rights could be disadvantageous to the interests of Ghana.

The Bishop and his group however did not give details of how exactly Nana Oye's respect for homosexual rights could affect her work as minister or adversely affect the country.

Though Nana Oye has personally not commented on the matter, another group, the Domestic Violence Coalition, has asked her to ignore Bishop Benny Wood and his aggrieved Clergy fraternity.

Adolf Awuku, national coordinator of the Domestic Violence Coalition, has dared Bishop Benny Wood and his colleagues that if they really have a good case, they should stop the negative media campaign against Nana Oye and rather present their complaint to the Vetting and Appointments Committee of Parliament, the appropriate institution to register their protest against the Ministerial-nominee.

“If these clergy men have any opposition to her nomination, I think the appropriate avenue for seeking redress will be to appeal to the vetting committee, which sitting will be held in public.

“I am surprised that they will come at her at the time they are coming at her. What wrong did she do? Going to the rescue of human beings who were being lynched, who were being evicted from their homes for choosing to live differently from us.

“So long as she goes out to protect law abiding citizens, I don't think there should be any grounds to object to her nomination.

“The fact that majority of us are Christians does not mean only Christian views are be respected in this country. We are in a democracy.

We are not in a theocracy and I don't think the best way to elevate God is to go persecuting and attacking people who we don't think are living right,” Mr. Awuku told Joy FM.
