Half Assini (W/R), Oct. 12, GNA – The Mineral Resources Law of the country should be amended as a matter of urgency to include oil and gas in order to benefit people of Jubilee Field in the Western Region.

Under the current law, people of Jubilee Field, who are directly affected by activities of the off-shore project, are not entitled to royalties from oil revenue.

These concerns were raised by participants, including officials of Jomoro District Assembly, at a day's validation workshop on Local Government Revenue Tracking Project, on Wednesday at Half Assini.

The event was organised by SEND-Ghana and the Friends of the Nation, non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Participants observed that district assemblies in mining areas of the country enjoy royalties from mining companies, but those in the Jubilee Field area, do not benefit from any such package.

They, therefore, called for the amendment of the existing law, to ensure fairness, equity and development.

Mr Solomon Kwesi Ampofo, official of Friends of the Nation, said the people in the Jubilee Field area were being empowered to demand accountability and utilisation of assembly's revenue.

Mr Amadu Abudu, Jomoro District Coordinating Director, commended the NGOs for organizing the event.

Similar programmes are to be organised at Tarkwa-Nsuem in the Western Region and Tolon-Kumbugu in the Northern Region.
