An initial assessment by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and the Builsa North District Assembly has indicated that about 325 houses in Sandema in the Upper East Region have been affected by flood as a result of continuous rain in the area on Wednesday, September 19.

According to the District Chief Executive, Norbert Awuley, about 715 people had been displaced either as a result of their houses collapsing or being flooded.

The Builsa North DCE told DAILY GUIDE yesterday that he and staff of NADMO were yet to go to the outskirts of the district where he suspected that the effects would be severe.

Even though the rainfall in the district on Wednesday was not very heavy, Mr Awuley said a river in the district overflowed its banks because the rainfall was severe in communities upstream.

Many of the affected suburbs of Sandema were affected by floods that hit the area in 2007 and after 2007.

Affected roads include the Navrongo-Sandema road, Seniese-Doringa and Sandema-Fumbisi roads. Some culverts were washed away, thereby making some roads unusable. Residents also told DAILY GUIDE over phone that many food items in homes had either been washed away or soaked by water.

At the time of filing this report yesterday, the DCE and NADMO were writing a report to be given to the president who was in the region to tour some affected areas after a downpour that hit many parts of the region on September 5, 2012.
