Woman,49, arrested for defrauding sister's husband

Tarkwa, Sept 20, GNA - A 49-year-old trader, Mary Ackah Bedu is in trouble with the law for allegedly defrauding his sister's husband to the tune of GH¢18,000.

Mary, a resident of Tarkwa, pleaded not guilty. She is facing one count of defrauding by false pretences.

The Tarkwa circuit court presided over by Mr. Samuel Obeng Diawuo adjourned the case to September 24th.

Prosecuting, Detective Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah earlier on told the court that the complainant Enu Armah is a farmer and a native of Bokazo in the Western Region who is married to the accused person's sister.

He said in the year 2005, the complainant and his wife returned from Italy and approached the accused at Tarkwa to assist them buy a house.

According to the Prosecutor, the couples later gave Mary 10,000 Euros which is presently equivalent to GH¢24,000 to enable her purchase the house but she failed to do so for the complainant after receiving the money. Detective Amponsah said after three years later, the complainant called the accused on phone and directed her to inspect a land at Kasoa in the Central region and buy it for him.

The accused did as directed by the complainant and alleged that she used GH¢ 6,000 to procure the land but has hence failed to refund the balance of 18,000 cedis.

The Prosecutor said in 2011, the complainant returned from Italy to Ghana and arbitrated on the matter with the accused before some of her relatives during which a brother of the accused promised to refund the balance on behalf of Mary but he failed.

He said on August 8, the complainant reported the incident to the Police and this led to the arrest of the accused.

The accused on Wednesday provided a part payment of GH¢3,000 to the complainant before the court.
