College of Nursing and Midwifery to be established in Accra

Cape Coast, Aug 30, GNA - A College of Nursing and Midwifery will soon be established in the capital, Accra to afford nurses and midwives the opportunity to acquire further training in special fields of study.

The Ministry of Health, Nursing and Midwifery Council and the Ghana Registered Nurses Association (GRNA) have joined forces to set up the College which will receive funding from the Government of Ghana.

Nurses and midwives who have already had basic training in the various schools of nursing and midwifery will be considered for enrolment.

Mr Kwasi Asante-Krobea, National President of the GRNA, made this known when some newly elected executives of the Association interacted with nurses and midwives at the Central Regional Hospital in Cape Coast on Thursday.

He said a bill had already been passed in Parliament and that plans were underway for the College to be established by December this year.

Mr Asante-Krobea said a Migrant Desk has also been set up by the Association to educate, counsel and assist members who wish to travel abroad to practice their profession since most of them who go without assistance are left stranded.

He said nurses constitute the largest contingent of health care professionals in the healthcare sector, they are therefore enjoined to do their best and deepen their affection for the job in order to “brighten the corners in which they are”.

The President said the Association will ensure nurses and midwives get the best of services by collaborating with management of health facilities to create a safe and conducive environment for them to work.

He said the Association was also there to assist members who wish to further their education and encourage them to aspire to greater heights.

Dr Daniel Asare, Medical Director in charge of the Central Regional Hospital, said the current 120 nurses population of the hospital was “inadequate” and stressed the need for nurses to be well-motivated for them to give off their best since they are the backbone of every hospital.
