Timely police arrival saves thief from being lynched

Moseaso (Ash), Aug 17, GNA – The timely arrival of the police saved a 20-year old suspected thief from being lynched by an angry mob at Moseaso in the Amansie West District.

Kwabena Owusu was said to have stolen three fat sheep, tied them in the bush and engaged the services of a taxi driver to transport them.

The driver, quick in thought and action, drove the suspect together with the animals back to the town and handed him over to the unit committee.

When the information spread to the people in the community they became incensed, seized him from the members of the committee and decided to administer their own justice.

The police got wind of what was happening and rushed to the scene.

They had to fire warning shots to scare the irate youth, who responded by pelting the police with stones.

In the confusion, one of the young men, Kwabena Adu, was hit by stray bullet and is receiving treatment at the Accident and Emergency Centre of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

Meanwhile, Owusu has appeared before the Nkawie Circuit Court presided over by Justice Frank Afriyie, charged with stealing.

He pleaded not guilty and was remanded into prison custody.

He was ordered to return to the court to answer for his crime on Wednesday, August 29.
