Church Service Mark One Week Of President Mills' Death

By Timothy Gobah & Musah Yahaya Jafaru - Daily Graphic

A solemn service was held at the Castle, Osu, Tuesday, in remembrance of President John Evans Atta Mills, who passed on a week ago.

Bible readings on the significance of sound moral virtues, prayers and songs of praise led by the Navy band and the Castle choir characterised the service held at the Castle Gardens.

There were, however, no sermons and speeches, which close associates of the late President said would have been his wish to have a simple but solemn service.

All the dignitaries, including President John Dramani Mahama, first Lady, Lordina, former President Jerry John Rawlings, his wife, Nana Konadu, Members of the Council of State, Ministers of State, Members of Parliament , security commanders and Members of the Diplomatic Corps were dressed in black and red to signify their grief over the death of the former President.

The beauty of the solemen occasion was nearly marred by a near confrontation between a security guard of former President Rawlings and a woman known only as Araba before the start of the service.

The woman wailed and cast insinuations, which some people around said were directed at the former President Rawlings. While the woman was being taken away from the service ground, the security guard followed up but was prevented from getting to her.

A Member of the Council of State, Rev Dr Nii Amoo Darku, who delivered the opening prayer, thanked God for giving former President Mills to Ghana, Africa and the whole world.

The first reading from Eccl. 7:1-5 was read by Cdre. Steve Obimpeh, the second reading from John 11:20-37 was taken by Ms Sherry Ayitey, while the third reading was delivered by Mr Kwame Bebaako-Mensah.

In a prayer, Rev S.Y. Kwame said the late President loved his God, his people and espoused peace, brotherliness to all, irrespective of political affiliation, religion or ethnicity.

He expressed the hope that the nation would learn the virtues of former President Mills and continue to live together as brothers and sisters.
