Hiawa, (W/R) July 3, GNA- An illegal mining pit on Monday caved in on three men who went prospecting for gold nugget at Hiawa in Amanfi West District.
The deceased who were illegal miners have been identified as Kwame Afedze 29, Yaw Sarpong 27 and Yaw Bassako 35.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency on the tragedy, Assistance Superintendent of Police (ASP), Emmanuel Nuirisor, Crime Officer in charge of Prestea Huni/Valley District said the unpleasant incident happened on Monday around 1300 hours.
He said as a result of a land slide that occurred following the continuous rainfall in the area, the deceased were resting on top of the pit when it suddenly caved in and trapped them to death.
ASP Nuirisor said the bodies of the deceased have since been retrieved and deposited at the Wassa Akropong government hospital morgue for autopsy.
