Aminu Alhassan, a resident of Mamobi, Accra, is being held by the Nima Police over his alleged role in the disappearance and possible death of his friend, Abass Saani, 25, with whom he travelled to Obuasi to buy gold.
The possible murder of Abass Saani for a ritual is the current gossip in the neighbourhood.
Abass was said to have told his roommate and some family members that they should hold Aminu responsible should he not return from the trip.
The suspect, Aminu Alhassan, a shoe maker who hails from Yendi in the Northern Region, is alleged to have told Abass' family that he had been killed by armed robbers.
According to him, he however escaped by vanishing because he had voodoo powers.
Sensing foul play and suspecting that the suspect might have used their relative for ritual purposes, the family members of the victim reported the matter to the Nima Police, who are currently investigating the case.
Confirming the arrest to the media, DSP Freeman Tetteh, the Public Relations Officer of the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, said Aminu Alhassan and Abass Saani lived in Mamobi, a suburb of Accra, but decided to travel to Obuasi to buy gold on June 8, 2012.
According to what Aminu told the police, upon reaching Kumasi, they both boarded a taxi occupied by two other passengers. The two passengers, he alleged, attacked them and in the event killed Abass Saani.
Continuing, the PRO said the suspect said he appeared in the room of a certain woman in Kumasi but he suspected that the robbers might have shot and killed his friend.
When he returned from Kumasi, according to information gathered by the police, the suspect bought himself a 50-inch LCD TV, a set of home theatre, a gas stove, double-door fridge and a gas cylinder, new clothes and an assortment of other items, prompting queries from family members of the deceased and curious persons in the neighbourhood.
The police have retrieved the items, a fetish-looking object otherwise called juju and an amount of GH¢3,100.
A roommate of the victim, Edmond Aholu Geminu, told DAILY GUIDE that when Abass and the suspect left for Obuasi, Abass constantly communicated with him via text messages until he lost contact with him a few days later.
'On Monday June 18, 2012, I met Aminu Alhassan at Kaneshie and when I asked him of the whereabouts of the victim, he told me he had no idea,' he said.
'Based on the text messages that I received from the victim when he was away, I told the family to contact Aminu Alhassan who knows the whereabouts of their son,' he added.
Suspect Aminu Alhassan was picked by the police on Monday evening.
