CAPE TOWN (AFP) - The spy chief for South African police, Richard Mdluli, has been moved from his powerful post pending the outcome of an investigation against him, the police minister said Wednesday.
Mdluli has been embroiled in controversy since he was charged with murder and corruption in 2011. The charges were provisionally withdrawn earlier this year and a court inquest opened.
He was then reinstated as spy boss, prompting an outcry amid police top brass and sparking new allegations that he had looted a fund meant for witness protection.
Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa told lawmakers that the inspector general of intelligence would further look into claims that Mdluli was spared a trial due to political meddling.
"Whilst this probe is underway... Lieutenant General Mdluli should be shifted from his current position with effect today, as the head of crime intelligence, and moved to another division," Mthethwa told parliament.
His new post would be determined by the acting police chief.
Mthethwa said Mdluli had been informed of the decision and pledged to support the process.
Mdluli was arrested last year over his alleged involvement in the 1999 killing of a man who was married to his former lover.
An internal police investigation has also accused him of financial mismanagement, abuse of power and nepotism.
Political parties and civic groups have called for his dismissal, saying his reputation has been severely tainted by his criminal charges.
