Accra, February 6, 2012: In a unique demonstration of their commitment to promoting a better and cleaner environment, one community at a time, members of the Planeteer Movement of Ghana organized a cleanup exercise on Saturday at the Abofu Area in Achimota.

Supporting this notable cause was the world-renowned environmentalist and Founder of the Planeteer Movement, Barbara Pyle and Mr James Koglo, Assemblyman of the Achimota- Abofu Area. This clean up exercise forms part of the Planeteers' activity calendar for Ms Pyle's 4 day visit to the country.

Award winning environmentalist and eco-expert Barbara Pyle arrived in Ghana with Laura Turner Seydel to support the Rotary Club and the Planeteer Movement of Ghana who are primarily environment-friendly groups. She, along with Ted Turner, CNN Founder, created popular animated environmentalist program, Captain Planet Series and the Planeteers which inspired the eco-friendly Planeteer Movement.

Mr James Koglo was also actively involved in the clean up exercise lauded the efforts of the group and encouraged Members of the Planeteers Movement of Ghana. In his remarks, Mr Koglo noted that “this is a very important aspects of life itself but it is sad that we take it for granted and often ignore it altogether. The environment we live in dictates so many patterns in our lives that we sometimes are not even aware of. Our health, for example is highly dependent on how well we keep our surroundings. This effort, I hope will go beyond the surroundings of our constituency and into all the other parts of the city. I hope that others are motivated to do just as much or even more for their communities all over the country. I am so proud of these young, energetic men and women who want to make a lasting change in the world. We need more people like them.”

The Planeteer Movement of Ghana has experienced some steady growth in Ghana since its inception. This year, there were as many as 30 Planeteers helping with this cleanup project. This exercise was part of Planeteer Ghana's efforts to raise awareness about our environment and the dangers in not protecting it. Just like last year's clean up exercise, this was a success.
