Accra, Jan. 30, GNA - The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), on Monday cut sod for the commencement of work on a four three-storey 18 classroom block for Kotobabi Abavana Cluster of Schools.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is supporting the project with .7 million under the Millennium City Schools Development Project.
The project is expected to be completed before the end of this year.
Over the past few years, the AMA has made conscious efforts to end the shift system in schools in the Accra Metropolis, to make the dream of making Accra a Millennium City come true.
Under the project, the Assembly has initiated projects within the metropolis to halt the shift system.
It has constructed 50 three-storey18 unit classroom blocks for some selected schools.
The Chief Executive of AMA, Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, said Government was committed to providing infrastructure to enhance education in the country.
He praised the US Ambassador to Ghana, Donald Telteibaum, and Chery Anderson, Mission Director of USAID, and the people of US for supporting education in the country.
Mr Vanderpuije said the ground breaking marked the beginning of partnership between USAID and AMA to construct more millennium schools in the metropolis.
“I'm proud about these projects. The products of vision and dedication will make our lives richer and more fulfilling. We are beginning, today, a new chapter on this historic site; we begin our promise to each other, our children and our generation”.
Telteibaum called for early completion of the project to enhance education in the country.
The USAID Mission Director, Chery Anderson, pledged the support of the Mission to ensure execution of the project to improve education in the country.
Mr Alfred Osei, Accra Metropolitan Director of Education, said the shift system reduced instructional hours and promoted truancy and school dropout.
