Two in court for fraud

A trader and a rental agent have been arraigned before an Accra court for allegedly defrauding a network engineer of an amount of GH¢4,250, under the pretext of giving him a residential apartment to rent.

The accused persons, Mavis Akunor and Samuel Brown, currently at large, and both residents of Baatsona Spintex, allegedly posed as property owners, who are into rental business, and subsequently rented out an apartment which they have no entitlement to.

They are facing two counts of conspiracy to commit crime, contrary to section 23 of act 29/60, and defrauding by false pretense, contrary to section 131 of act 29/60.

The first accused person, who was present, pleaded not guilty to both charges leveled against her before the court, presided over by Sedinam Agbemeva. She was admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢10,000, with two sureties.

A bench warrant has, however, been issued for the arrest of the second accused person, and the court adjourned sitting to February 21, 2012.

Narrating the facts of the case, the Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Anthony Afekye, told the court that on January 5, 2012, the complainant received a phone call from the second accused person, that he had been told by a friend that he, the complainant, needed a residential apartment to rent.

He said the second accused person told the complainant that he had lots of properties for rent, and could help get an apartment for rent.

According to him, arrangements were made, and the complainant met the second accused person, who took him to a house, opened all the doors for him to inspect, and after the inspection, contacted the first accused person, who posed as the landlady of the house.

'On January 14, 2012, the first accused person contacted the complainant on phone to meet her at the house, where a sum of GH¢2,000 was paid to her.

'On January 1, 2012, both accused persons went to meet the complainant office and took another GH¢2,250 from him, and promised giving him the keys to the house the next day,' the prosecutor told the court.

The Chief Inspector mentioned that both accused persons, however, failed to show up to give the keys to the complainant as promised, adding that the incident was reported to the police, and the first accused person was arrested from her hideout at Spintex.

He indicated that Mavis Akunor admitted the offence in her caution statement.
