A businessman, Mr. George Sika at Vakpo in the newly created North Dayi District is venturing into environmental protection activities to help protect the vegetation, by developing a two-acre bamboo grove at Vakpo, as part of his efforts to ensure that the people appreciate the importance of conserving the environment.
Mr. Sika, who was speaking to the Volta File at Vakpo, said bamboo had so many uses such as furniture and other decorative materials, but it was becoming very clear that most Ghanaians did not know the vital role bamboo could play in the socio economic development of the nation, and destroy the plant through human activities.
He said his objective was to help protect the environment by developing a bamboo grove on a large scale, which would serve as an entertainment ground for social activities like funerals, parties and community durbars among others, as a way of promoting eco-tourism in the area.
Mr. Sika disclosed that currently, the bamboo grove was attracting many local and foreign tourists, and which provides a natural canopy and refreshing resting place for tourists who visit the resort.
The businessman, who has developed a special love for nature, said the bamboo resort center at Vakpo was rapidly providing the quest for new tourist attraction sites in the region.
Mr. Sika said the special noise that bamboo makes anytime the wind blows was so unique that some tourists who visit the bamboo resort center for the first time, panic and look around, because the natural noise produced by the plant sounds just like a group of people engaged in conversation.
He pointed out that apart from the uniqueness of the natural environment of the grove he had discovered a particular place that a rainbow is formed from the ground before gradually rising up into the sky, before becoming visible to all.
According to Mr. Sika, who is the Managing Director of the Bamboo Grove Resort Center, most people did not know that the rainbow seen in the sky, especially during the rainy season, was formed from the ground, and that as a result of the discovery people, visit the place frequently.
Mr. Sika, who has not decided on how much to charge tourists to the center, said other facilities such as restaurants and drinking sports were available to cater for tourists, and said he had already started building a guest house to provide accommodation.
