GaDangme Europe on floods in Accra

GaDangme Europe (GDEu), an Association of natives from the Greater Accra Region resident in various countries in Europe, have expressed concern about the recent floods that hit the city of Accra causing devastation to lives and property.

In a statement from the Secretariat of the GDEU, it expressed its sincere sympathy to the flood victims and their families, the loss, injury, damage and destruction to property. It said members of the Association heart goes out to victims during this period of stress, misfortune, disappointments and having to come to terms with this natural devastation. “We share with you in your plight, we share your hardships and we hope valuable lessons have been learnt. It is heartbreaking to continually hear about incidents like these from our motherland,” the statement quoted.

It said they will not forget the damage caused by the flood waters and hope the authorities concerned will rally around to form a Committee to scope out both short and long term strategies in dealing with flooding generally in Accra and other likely flood areas in Ghana. “We must also note that the flooding will not cease or disappear overnight and as a nation, we should start planning for such adverse weather conditions,” another part of the statement said.

The GDEU in its opinion believes the key issues in the short term is to address emergency measures during flooding and the long term measures must aim at flood prevention projects which must involve an element of public consultation. The statement further added it hope the nation will overcome the devastation and rebuild the homes and shattered lives.
