One-hundred and fourteen tertiary students in the Ashanti region are receiving laptop computers from the rLG Communications, under the Better Ghana ICT Project.

An additional 30 computers have been distributed to one Senior High School at Nkensaasu and two other Junior High Schools at Akomadan, in the Offinso-North District.

The individual beneficiaries fall under the Mathematics, Science and Technology Scholarship (MASTES) programme, initiated by the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology to promote teaching and learning of science.

rLG Communications, which is the key private sector partner of the initiative, is distributing 1,500 laptops nationwide to underscore the practical implementation of the project.

The government sponsored scheme also involves the training of teachers in ICT at the rLG Institute of Technology.

Under this initiative, 4,500 teachers nationwide will benefit from hands-on practical training and experience with ICT devices and applications. The first batch of 310 teachers has successfully gone through the training nationwide.

Thirty teachers and circuit supervisors in the Offinso-North District are among beneficiaries of the training.

Addressing a presentation event at Akomadan, Head of Training at rLG, Isaac Appiah expressed optimistic the project will enhance ICT teaching and learning in schools.

“We all understand that Information and Communication Technologies are driving global development and are in fact changing the way we live, work and carry out our businesses. It is in this regard that the Ministry of Education has thought it wise, proper and crucial to train teachers to understand the use of ICTs for their own benefit as individuals, and for the benefit of the pupils they guide”, he stated.

Ashanti Regional Deputy Minister, Ms. Animah Wilson, reiterated the importance of ICT to socio-economic development.

She commended rLG for the support to government and enjoined other institutions to also lend a hand in educational development.
