Mothers share mattresses with new born babies at Ridge Hospital

By Asempa News/Ghana

Newly born babies and their mothers are sharing students' mattresses after being discharged at the Ridge Hospital in Accra.

This is because the Regional Hospital does not have enough beds for them to rest while they wait for family members to come pick them home.

Those who do not have the mattresses have no option but to wait outside with their babies for their families to come and pick them home.

So serious is the situation that, mothers on admission for one reason or the other are left with no option than to share a single students' mattress with their babies on the floor.

These were some of the scenes witnessed by Asempa News' reporter Yaa Ayisah when she visited Ridge Hospital and interacted with some of these mothers who disclosed that due to the pressure on the beds, they are asked to vacate their beds with their belongings immediately they are discharged.

They said, there is no proper sitting place for the mothers to sit whilst waiting for their families, so they stand outside with their babies till their family members come for them or look for taxi themselves to go home, provided they have no bills to settle.

However the hospital administrator at the Ridge Hospital in Accra, Kwame Opoku says the problem confronting the mothers cannot be blamed on them.

He blamed the ceaseless pressure on the facilities at the hospital.

Speaking to Asempa News he noted that the problem is beyond just buying equipment for the hospital but new hospital has to be built.

i never understand this. Is it that difficult to erect a building and put beds in them for women who are pregnant? I saw this in Komfo Anokye some years ago. We have a lot of timber in Ghana. Do they have to lay on the floor? Then when a deputy ministers wife dies we begin to complain. This is very sad. Yes let us keep on buying more jets and we will see where we will end up. Please do not forget the people who voted u to power!!!
